FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you perhaps have one or two outstanding questions concerning wood floor sanding and finishing in Hastings TN34? That’s probably a silly question – we’re sure you do! So here we present a list of those which, in our 20 years of experience, keep cropping up on a regular basis. If yours aren’t here, call us and we’ll be happy to help.

HOW LONG WILL MY HOUSE BE A MESS?

There are actually two separate questions here. Answering them in reverse, there will not be any mess at all for you to worry about! There will inevitably be some amount of noise (so you might want to give the neighbours a head’s up!), but our specialist sanding machines are designed to reduce dust production to an absolute minimum by retaining it in sacks so we can dispose of it later. We seal off other parts of your home or business as we work, too, and just before we leave we thoroughly tidy the place up.

For a room of average size such as a bathroom, hallway or dining room, this will take us one day to repair and sand and a further day to apply the finish. The sanding phase may involve up to three sweeps with our heavy-duty machines, and you may have to allow just a bit longer for the repairs if the floor is in a very poor condition. Also, after the finish has been applied it must be allowed to cure the wood properly, so you won’t be able move the furniture back in or to walk on it safely for a couple more days.

There’ll be nothing to stop you opening the door and admiring it, though!

I'M A BIT HANDY WITH THE OLD DIY - COULDN'T I SIMPLY HIRE A SANDER AND DO IT MYSELF?

Hire shops often do deals on sanders and some people obviously feel confident about sanding and finishing their own floors, either as a DIY challenge, to save money or for whatever other reason. It depends what sort of a floor you want at the end of it. If you want a roughly-sanded floor full of gaps or with filler crumbling between the boards, a badly-applied stain that looks patchy and wet in places and a partner who’s not at all happy with it, then by all means have a go! But don’t say we didn’t warn you…

Sanders from hire shops are usually older models and poorly maintained, so even if you’re great at floor sanding (and if so, why aren’t you working for us?) you’ll be limited by the tools. Our sanders are perfectly maintained and we have the latest dust-free models. More importantly, our Hastings floor sanding team of experts are highly experienced and make short work of floors whatever their condition. We repair them expertly, use specialist fillers that won’t crumble or dislodge, sand the boards smoothly and evenly and apply the finish perfectly. Do yourself a favour and call in the experts for this physically demanding work. It’s not something for a rainy afternoon.

DO I REALLY NEED TO FILL THE GAPS?

Gaps always develop between floorboards. They cause irritating creaks and allow heat to escape from the house so they need to be filled in. We use specialist silicon and resin fillers and seals to do this, rather than the more lightweight and frankly useless general-purpose products from DIY suppliers.

CAN I STAIN THE FLOOR MYSELF AFTER YOU'VE SANDED IT?

Staining a floor is not like painting a wall. You can’t use a roller, for starters! Staining is an acquired skill and if you make a mess of it all the previous work of repairing and sanding the floorboards will have been wasted. When a floor has been properly stained it will possess a deep, rich, even glow that seems to emanate right from the heart of the wood. This is what customers are looking for, not a patchy mess that soon gets hidden under a carpet again.

Use the experienced Hastings floor sanding and finishing team to do full justice to your wooden floor by staining it professionally. Have it done properly and it will last you for years, and only need buffing and polishing regularly to keep it looking fabulous.

OKAY, I'M CONVINCED. BUT SURELY I CAN GO DOWN THE DIY SHOP AND GET SOME FILLER MYSELF ?

We use a selection of resin and silicon sealants, which are all eco-friendly and very effective at securely sealing the floor. General purpose fillers from a DIY outlet are simply not fit for this particular purpose because they’ll just crumble and fall into the sub-floor spaces or else get sucked up by vacuum cleaners.

We fill in the gaps with these specialist products and also use natural wood slivers to prepare the floor for sanding, so you’ll end up with a beautifully smooth finish when we’re all done.
